How audiobooks get made.
About Audiobook Creation Exchange
ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) is a marketplace owned by Audible (Amazon) that connects authors, literary agents, and publishers with narrators and recording studios. It allows authors to turn their books into audiobooks that are sold on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. For voice actors, ACX is the primary hub for finding audiobook narration jobs.
Narrators can be paid in two ways: a flat "Per Finished Hour" (PFH) rate paid upon completion, or a "Royalty Share" where they earn 50% of the audiobook's royalties for 7 years. This royalty model allows narrators to build a passive income stream if they narrate a book that sells well. It is a legitimate and powerful platform for voice talent to monetize their skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. specific equipment do I need?
You need a professional-quality microphone, a computer with recording software (DAW), and a sound-treated space to record. ACX has strict audio quality submission standards, so background noise or poor audio quality will lead to rejection.
2. How much can I earn?
PFH rates typically range from $50 to $400+ per finished hour of audio, depending on your experience. If you choose Royalty Share, you earn nothing upfront but receive 20-25% of the retail sales (split with the author) for the life of the distribution deal.
3. Do I have to audition?
Yes, you must upload a demo reel to your profile and submit specific auditions for each book you want to narrate. The author or rights holder reviews the auditions and selects the narrator that best fits their characters and tone.
4. specific residency requirements?
Yes, currently ACX is only open to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland who have a valid tax ID and bank account in their country of residence. They verify your location and identity before you can accept contracts.
5. How do royalties work?
If you choose a Royalty Share deal, you and the author split the 40% royalty paid by Audible (meaning you each get 20% of the book's price). Payments are calculated monthly and deposited directly into your bank account.
