ThredUp
Secondhand clothes, firsthand fun.
About ThredUp
ThredUp is an online consignment and thrift store that aims to make selling used clothes as easy as possible. Unlike Poshmark or Depop where you have to photograph, list, and ship each item yourself, ThredUp does all the work for you. You simply order a 'Clean Out Kit' (a large polka-dot bag), fill it with your gently used clothes, and mail it back for free.
Once ThredUp receives your bag, their team inspects, photographs, prices, and lists your items for sale. When an item sells, you earn a percentage of the sale price or shopping credit. While the payouts per item are lower than selling them yourself, the convenience factor is unmatched. It is the perfect solution for bulk decluttering without the hassle of managing an online store.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much of the sale price do I keep?
Payouts are based on the selling price. For cheaper items (under $20), payouts are low (5-15%). For luxury items selling over $200, you can earn up to 80%. It is a consignment model, so they take a cut for doing the labor.
2. What happens to items they don't accept?
ThredUp has strict quality standards. If they reject items (due to wear, stains, or brand), they can either responsibly recycle them for you or return them to you for a fee (Return Assurance), depending on what you selected when ordering the kit.
3. What brands do they accept?
They accept over 35,000 brands, ranging from Gap and J.Crew to Gucci and Lululemon. They generally do not accept non-brand items or fast fashion brands lacking size tags.
4. Can I set my own prices?
Yes, to an extent. Once your items are processed and listed, you have a window of time where you can adjust the listing price within a certain range to try and earn more.
5. How do I get paid?
You can use your earnings to shop on ThredUp immediately. If you want cash, you can cash out via PayPal or Stripe (bank transfer) after a 14-day return window has passed for the sold item.
